Airlines policies due to coronavirus

Airlines have responded by introducing more flexible change policies to customers who need to postpone or cancel the trip due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The coronavirus outbreak has made a huge negative impact on the whole travel industry. Due to the coronavirus which has spread to many countries, Most governments have started implementing tough border control regulations and closure of main airports in a bid to control the spread of coronavirus.

Following are a few lists of airlines that made flexible changes to cancellation and rebooking policies.

Air Canada 

Air Canada is waiving change fees on new bookings which are made up to 31 March 2020 for travel that must be completed by 31 December 2020. The airline is also allowing passengers to make a date change one-time change on existing bookings made before 4 March 2020 for travel through 30 April 2020.

Air France 

All bookings made before 31st March to international and domestic destinations can be postponed until 31st May, free of charge. Fare difference will be applicable if the same booking class is no longer available.

Italy’s national airline is waiving change fees on international tickets for travel through 30th June. Customers are also permitted to change the destination of their trip, without extra charge, if they want to keep the same date. Again, fare differences are applicable and tickets must be changed before 3 April, 2020.


American Airlines 

American Airlines announced that it would waive change fees for customers who purchased tickets before 1st March for travel through 30th April. The offer is available on any of American’s fares and customers have until 31st December, though they must pay fare differences. The airline is also offering changes and refunds for any flights to Italy or South Korea purchased on or before 24th February 2020; on Hong Kong tickets purchased before 28th January 2020 and on China tickets purchased before 24th January 2020.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) updates – American Airlines Group, Inc.

British Airways 

British Airways is waiving rebooking fees on all new flight and holiday bookings to any destination, both domestic and international. Customers can change the travel date on bookings made between 3rd to 31st March without paying a new booking fee; or exchange bookings for travel credit. Flights must be rebooked up to 12 months from the original flight date.

Cathay Pacific

The Hong Kong-based carrier is offering free changes on new bookings up until 20th April, 2020. Customers who purchased a ticket before 9th March can still change their booking, though some fees may apply. Passengers travelling to, through or from Hong Kong between now and 31st May, 2020 can reschedule their flight without charge but they must rebook before 10th December, 2020.

Delta Airline

Delta is waiving change fees for travel to both domestic and international destinations for all tickets issued on or before 9th March for travel through 30th April. The airline has also agreed to waive change fees for customers travelling to Europe, the UK, Beijing, Shanghai and Seoul, through 31st May following the US government-issued travel restrictions.

The Dubai-based airline is allowing customers to reschedule bookings made on or before 31st March, at no extra cost. Fare differences may be applicable if the same class is no longer available.

Etihad Airways

Etihad says customers can amend their holiday and flight dates free of charge on new bookings from 8th March until 7th April, 2020. Those who are due to fly before 30th June, but whose flights have been cancelled, are also permitted to reschedule. Fare differences will be applicable.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) travel updates


There appears to be a good chance that passengers can exchange their existing ticket (booked before 11th March and valid for travel between 1st March and 30th April 2020) to destinations including Madrid, Japan, Shanghai and Italy for travel credit of the same amount, if all the conditions are met. The credit is valid for travel up to 31st December, 2020 but some blackout dates apply.

Indigo Airways

Indigo airways in waving changes fees For bookings made between 09th March, 2020 till 31st March, 2020, for any travel date.Can reschedule your journey multiple times, without paying any change fee, fare difference if any will be applicable.changes have to be made at least 3 days prior to your travel date.can reschedule your journey multiple times for travel before 31st March, 2020 without paying any change fee.

Qantas and Jetstar

Qantas and Jetstar are waiving change fees for new international bookings made from now until 31st March for travel through 30th June 2020. It’s limited to one change per customer and customers will need to pay any fare difference applicable. 


Qatar Airways

Qatar has a pretty generous waiver policy. Passengers on domestic and international flights for travel through 30th June, 2020 can apply to reschedule or exchange their booking for credit that’s valid for travel up to 12 months after the original booking date.

Korean Air 

The airline is waiving change fees for flights booked on or before 1st March, 2020 between North America and Korea, including flights with a stopover in Korea. New tickets must be rebooked before 30 June, 2020. The airline is also offering similar policies for travellers in Southeast Asia, and for passengers with entry restrictions or denied boarding due to Covid-19.

KLM is waiving change fees on tickets issued on or before 31st March, and valid for travel between 4th March and 31st May 2020. Customers can rebook tickets at no extra cost apart, though fare differences will be applicable if the same class is no longer. 

Latest flight information


The German airline says all bookings made on or before 5th March for travel through 30th April, 2020 can be rescheduled free of charge up to 31st December, 2020. It’s also waiving rebooking fees on flights purchased between 6th and 31st March, 2020. Again, customers must reschedule before 31st December, 2020 and fare differences applicable if the same class is no longer.

Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines’ Ultimate Flexibility Ticket Change Policy for existing and new bookings.ticket issued on or before 31st March.rebooked travel must be completed 31st December 2020. Unlimited changes to the date of their flight (with a waiver of the date change fee). Changes to a destination (any difference in fare will apply)

One time difference in fare will be waived for deferred/new travel date. The flexibility of taking the earlier flights on the same day of departure for travel on the same sector for travel from 13 March 2020  until 21 May 2020. Rebooking must be made of the new travel date must be made on/before 31 May 2020. Travel date to completed by 31 December 2020 based on seat availability.

COVID-19: Important Notice to Passengers

Singapore Airlines and Silk air 

Singapore Airlines and its sister carrier SilkAir are waiving change fees for all tickets issued between 6th to the 31st March, 2020. The rescheduled travel date must commence before 31st March, 2021. Fare differences apply if the same class no longer.

Srilankan Airlines

Accordingly, Srilankan Airlines will waive change and reissue fees on all tickets issued on or before 31st March 2020. Irrespective of the routing and place of issue, the Airline shall permit one change (Flight/date/routing) to ensure utmost convenience in view of various flight disruptions and regulations imposed around the world. If there is a difference in the airfare or applicable taxes, due to the reissue/reroute of the ticket, the additional amount will have to be borne by the passenger. Can postpone or advance their new dates of travel to any available date in the future.

Virgin Atlantic 

Virgin is waiving its change fees for flights booked before 4th March, for travel between 1st March and 30th April 2020. Flights can be rebooked between 9th March to the 30th September 2020. For bookings made between 1st to the 31st March, flights can be rebooked between 2nd March to the 30th September 2020.
