Australia has announced that it would keep its borders closed for tourist until 2021. Entry rules will be relaxed for students and long term visitors trade Minister Simon Birmingham said on Wednesday.

There would be strict quarantine rules for returning students and visitors who plan to stay for a longer time in Australia. Australia just like its neighbouring country New Zeland has been successfully containing the spread of COVID-19. The country has relaxed certain lockdown restrictions in the past few weeks.

‘We can simply work through the 14-day quarantine periods that have worked so well in terms of returning Australians to this country safely,’ Mr Birmingham said in a speech to the National Press Club.

Australias fourth-largest foreign exchange earner has been international education, And with the relaxation of entry restrictions for international students, the industry believes this would be a big boost for its industry, which has been facing financial losses when the country was put on lockdown.

Australians have been urged to take backyard tourism to boost the domestic tourist industry. Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham said ‘For those Australians who can afford to do so, we want them to feel an almost patriotic duty to get out and support the jobs and small businesses of their fellow citizens by having whatever Aussie holiday they can,’ he told the National Press Club on Wednesday.
