Egadi Islands is a collection of five mountainous islands situated in the Mediterranean Sea. Egadi Island is just a stone’s throw away from Trapani & Marsala on the western coast of Sicily which is just 3km from the Italian mainland. The Egadi Islands has a great rich history that one could reminisce on. Following the end of Roman supremacy, this Island has succumbed at various times to different controls under the Saracens, Vandals, Normans and Goths. The Egadi Islands has a population of 5,000 which is spread across the islands. This Island never fails to delight itself as a great holiday destination. Each of the islands has its own characteristics but also each of these Islands makes sure to show off its gorgeous beaches and also boast of one of the best Marine Reserve in Europe.
Favignana is just a 20-minute ferry ride from Trapani. This is one of the most important and largest Island. This popular holiday destination is special for white sandy beaches & crystal clear blue waters, this also includes an irresistible trio of Cala Rossa, Cala Azzurra and Cala Rotonda. Alternating with these coves are a myriad of sea grottoes, such as Grotta Azzurra, Grotta dei Sospiri.
Favignana citta is the islands main town. This town is built around the port that nestles in a large bay and is dominated by the Fort of Santa Caterina. This was initially built by the Arabs as a watchtower and the Normans enlarged this. The Bourbon Kings used this as a prison. The Palazzo Florio, is a grand mansion which overlooks the harbour. At the opposite end of this harbour is the once used great tonnara or tuna fishery which was built by Ignazio Florio. These two builds represents Favignanas rich history. The Favignana town is great place which has a natural charm and relaxing atmosphere.
This Island is just an hours drive from Trapani. Marettimo is the westernmost and isolated of all the islands in Egadi Islands. This beautiful place is rich in terms of marine life and its rugged mountainous hinterland which has great dramatic limestone cliffs. There are endless panoramas to gaze about the beautiful views and mountain pathways for a relaxing walk.
This island is packed with a history and archaeological sites. There are remains of a Roman military outpost, this was built after the First Punic War. This remains as a testimony to the strategic importance the island played in antiquity. There is also a small Norman church which was built after the Arabs were driven put from Sicily in 1072.
Levanzo is shaped by hills and is the smallest of the three islands. Its rocky coastline which has been dominated by the highest peak which is the 278 metre “Pizzo dei Monaco” shows a rugged look. This island is a photography enthusiast go-to destination. The main site is Grotta dei Genovesi. This island is best for a peaceful and quiet vacation.
